Singapore Port Expansion

The busiest transit port in the world is expanding, rapidly. A few years ago a consortium consisting of Hyundai, Samsung, Penta Ocean, Boskalis and Van Oord was awarded the contract for construction of the second phase of the expansion. Phase two (see below) consists of the reclamation of land and construction of the quay wall at Finger Three. The Singapore government decided that all port activity should be relocated. This frees up the land close to the city centre which has a high value in real estate. Because the city-state is bound by Malaysia in the north, all the Singaporeans can do is build their way to the south, too much dismay of the Malaysians. Hence the decision was made to reclaim land south of the Tuas city district.

For the Finger Three project a total of 400 ha of land has to be reclaimed and 3.4 km of quay wall has to be constructed. This quay wall is constructed of caissons that are 30 m high. With the construction of such high quay the Singaporean government is getting the port ready for cargo vessels that are bigger than currently exist; the port is designed with hypothetical dimensions of potential future vessels. Hence the port has a design life of 60 years.
